Dirt Bike Wont Start? Possible Problems and How to Fix

If you’re having starting problems with your dirt bike, it’s important to figure out what the underlying cause may be before making any repairs or adjustments. If your bike has an issue that isn’t immediately apparent, you could end up making things worse rather than better if you make an improper adjustment or repair. We’ve assembled some of the most common causes of dirt bike starting problems along with ways to fix them so that you can get back on the trail sooner and safer.

If your dirt bike isn’t starting, then one of the first things you should check is your battery. If the battery is low or dead, then it won’t be able to send power to the starter motor correctly. This can be caused by a variety of things: If you ride in areas that have a lot of dust and debris (particularly on unpaved roads or trails), then it’s important to make sure that your battery terminals are clean and tight. You can also keep a trickle charger on your battery if you plan on sitting for long periods of time to help keep it topped off. Batteries are also known to lose their charge if they are stored in cold conditions and then driven after being cold started, so be sure that you give the starter a few minutes to get the engine warmed up before you drive it.

The starter motor is one of the most important components of your dirt bike because it’s responsible for turning over the engine as you start it up. If your starter motor isn’t working properly, then you’ll be unable to start your bike. To test this, turn off the key and then try to engage the starter by hand. If you are able to turn over the engine by hand, then it means that your starter motor is not engaging properly with its gear. This can be caused by a variety of things including a dirty gear mesh, loose bolts or improper teeth alignment on one of the gears inside. To fix this, you’ll need to pull the starter motor to inspect it for any loose or dirty parts.

The ignition system on your dirt bike is very similar to that of a car. Each time you turn the key in the ignition, it sends a signal to the engine that starts it up. If this signal isn’t getting through, then your bike will not start. The most common source of faulty ignition systems is corrosion in the wiring from metal connectors corroding or breaking loose from their mounts inside the headlight. Clean up all connections and make sure that everything looks clean, tight and free from corrosion before starting your bike again.

Your dirt bike fuel system is key to powering your bike and keeping the engine running. If there isn’t enough fuel reaching the engine, then it won’t be able to start up and run properly. One of the more common contributors for this problem is a bad fuel pump that does not have enough power to push fuel from the tank through the lines. This can be caused by a damaged or malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator in addition to a lack of gas in your gas tank. Another possible cause of this relates to a blocked fuel line or filter that prevents proper flow of fuel from the tank. To correct this issue, you’ll need to first remove the fuel pump and inspect it for any damage or obstruction. You may also need to clean out the filter or replace it if you find that it is clogged.

The spark plug on your dirt bike is one of the most important components in the ignition system and needs to be inspected whenever you have starting issues. This is because it’s responsible for producing sparks that ignite the fuel mixture inside your engine. If your plug has worn down too far, then it won’t be able to produce enough power for ignition. This can be caused by a dirty or low-quality electrode, or a loose spark plug wire that won’t make proper contact with the electrode. This is usually caused by riding on rough roads with rocks and debris in the tire treads, but it could also be caused by a damaged oil filter or improper carburetor adjustment.

The exhaust system on your dirt bike is responsible for getting rid of all of the harmful engine heat that builds up and prevents you from getting to your destination safely. If there are any holes in your exhaust system, then you may have problems starting because the heat generated from combustion pressure will not be expelled properly by your exhaust system. One of the most common issues with this is a cracked or broken exhaust header/bracket, which can be caused by roughing it on rough trails. To correct this issue, you’ll need to remove the header and inspect it for cracks or damage that would allow it to come loose. You may also need to replace the exhaust system if you find that there are cracks or holes in it that are allowing heat to escape while riding.

If your dirt bike won’t start because of poor ignition timing, then checking your timing is an important part of fixing any starting problems. The timing on your dirt bike controls when the spark plug fires in relation to the piston position. If it’s set too late, then you will have issues with the engine starting and running properly. This commonly occurs because of incorrect adjustment or a damaged ignition timing adjustment. To correct this, you’ll first need to check your manual to see if you need to adjust your timing yourself or if it should be adjusted at a shop. If it’s under warranty, then you may be able to have it inspected and reset by a professional mechanic at a local shop.

Having a quality start-up kit on your dirt bike is a must if you are riding on the trails. Many riders underestimate the importance of the kit; however, it can be very important in keeping your bike and its engine running smoothly.

Best Vintage Dirt Bikes To Buy with Prices and Specs

If you are looking for a dirt bike but cannot afford a brand new one, you can try buying vintage dirt bikes. Though a new one is ready to use and has no issues, it may cost you a lot of money – the reason why some motocross riders consider buying a used one. Whether it is a 2-stroke or 4-stroke, there are still good deals on the market. You just have to know which model to get and which one can still run with good performance.

The most reliable brands depend on the year and model. Some models were made in the late 90s but can still perform well and still be durable.

However, buying a vintage dirt bike is different from purchasing a second-hand car. You need to think about certain features and specifications to get the best model for your next motocross activity. Here are some of the models you can check out, including an estimate of how much you can get from the market.

Honda CR80/CR85

Price: $500-$1,500

Compression: 8:4:1

Oil Capacity: 0.58 US qt Transmission Oil or SAE 10W-40 4-stroke engine oil

Chain Size: #420

Front Tire: 70/100-19/17

Rear Tire: 90/100-16/14

Weight: around 145 pounds

It was between the years 1996-2002 when the Honda CR80 was introduced to the bike market. Usually, these are ridden by young teens that are getting on the tracks but are not ready yet to use a 2-stroke dirt bike. Honda changed its name to CR85 last 2003, but there were no major changes made to the engine.

Though most of the units do not look as good as other models, the CR80 and CR85 run fast and are the models which are made with good-performing inverted forks.

However, getting this model in good condition can be difficult since most of these units were already ridden hard on motocross. There is not much to maintain on the CR80/85, but you need to regularly change its oil and its filters and service on suspension, chains, and bearings.

Yamaha YZ125

Price: $800-$2,200

Engine: 124cc/2-stroke

Fuel Capacity: 2.1 US Gal

Power: 33.53 Hp

Front Tires: 80/100-21/51

Rear Tires: 100/90-19/57

Weight: 86 kg

The Yamaha YZ125 was released between 1999-2004. A decade after its release, it is still the standard model for 2-strokes and is still listed as the best 2-stroke model to buy. In 2002, it upgraded to a narrower body and became a 5-speed transmission dirt bike.

Maintenance for this model is easy since most of its parts are easily available at Yamaha service centers. However, you need to get the engines maintained regularly. Because of its good 125cc power, it is one of the most efficient motocross bikes for MX racing.

Though it can easily be bought on the market, most of the units are already abused. You need to check its air filter and box to know if it is clean and regularly maintained.

Honda XR200

Price: $400-$1,500

Engine: 4-stroke

Compression: 10.2:1

Fuel Capacity: 2.4 Gal

Power: 23 Hp

Front Tire: 3.00/21

Rear Tire: 110/90-17

Weight: 224.8 pounds

A classic MX ride from 1986-1991, Honda XR200 is simple and easy to use because of its lower seat height. It is also known as one of the best trail bikes with its power.

Changes to the engine were made in 1986. The 200cc motorbikes are lightweight since there are no added parts that weigh too much compared to the new models. Other changes were made during 1992, the suspensions were de-tuned, made the seat height was lower, and the rear shock cannot be rebuilt, unlike the previous models.

You may consider this dirt bike since it is easy to maintain, start, and modified for better power, and some parts are still available at Honda service centers. However, most vintage Honda XR200 sold in the market are improperly maintained. Fortunately, maintenance is easy since you only need to regularly change its oil. What you need to look out for are worn-out chains, bearings, sprockets, and other components. If its engine is making a loud noise and a lot of smoke, the dirt bike may need to be rebuilt.

Kawasaki KDX200/220

Price: $800-$2,000

Engine: 198cc/2-stroke

Compression: 7.7:1

Fuel Capacity: 3.2 Gal

Oil Capacity: 0.80 qt

Front Tire: 80/100-21

Rear Tire: 100/100-18

Weight: 240 pounds

You may have seen this bike in some movies during the 80s where riders are going on it fast in the woods. It is because these enduro bikes are made to get through tough trails without giving too much clutch work. The KDX200/220 runs smooth enough even for beginners. It can be modified with stiffer suspensions if you want to use it in racing.

This model is one of the quietest bikes ever built because the tailpipes are not pointed at the rider when riding on it. Having these in a noise-conscious area is a must to avoid people’s complaints. The original model was redesigned on 1995 – engines and suspensions were modified and brakes were improved to make a better model.

If you are looking for this vintage model, you need to check when was the last oil change the previous owner did. The air filter should also be clean and the engine should have no knocking sounds or other noise. Since the KDX200/220 are often used on trails, most of the units in the sale have dents or cracks which you also need to look out for. Kawasaki discontinued its release on the market from 2006 onwards.

Final Words

Vintage dirt bikes can still be bought from the markets. Some riders may save a lot on vintage compared to buying a new model. However, the majority of vintage dirt bikes are not well-maintained and need to be rebuilt. Remember to stay away from bikes that have a lot of issues with the engine since it may cost you more on repairs and replacement of parts. You can tell if the dirt bike is well-maintained by the owner or if it was kept dirty until for next ride.

Here are of the best places to buy used dirt bikes online.

eBay is a great place to buy used dirt bikes online because it is an established marketplace with a long history of buying and selling second-hand sporting goods, tools and equipment. eBay’s buyer protection program makes sure that you will get what you paid for if the product arrives and you are not satisfied. Craigslist is another good place for buying used dirt bikes online because of its wide user base in most major cities. Craigslist allows sellers to set prices for their used dirt bikes and gives buyers an opportunity to bargain as well (although this is not as common). Craigslist also has a relatively simple rating and feedback system so you can see how reliable other buyers and sellers have been. Although Craigslist is free for users, the website does charge people who want to post a public listing. The website also has a wide range of products for sale and makes it possible to search based on geographical location, which can be helpful if you want to buy something in your area or from your town or city.

Outdoor Classifieds is a website that allows users to buy and sell a wide range of outdoor gear, including miscellaneous motorized vehicles such as mini dirt bikes. Since the site’s services are free, it is an excellent place to go if you are looking for dirt bikes for sale in your area that may not be listed on other online marketplaces.

Facebook Marketplace is a Facebook-specific way to buy used dirt bikes online because it allows users to buy and sell products in their own city. Unlike other marketplaces, Facebook Marketplace has a rating system for its users so you can see how well other buyers and sellers have interacted previously. A number of people are looking for used dirt bikes these days, so Wanelo allows them to sell their used dirt bike in the same way they can sell the furniture they no longer need. The website allows sellers to list their product with a description and photo and gives buyers the opportunity to make an offer. Once the seller agrees to the price, Wanelo emails the seller to create a shipping label for their product, at which point it will be shipped to them.

Like most free classifieds websites, Kijiji is also an excellent place to buy used dirt bikes online because it allows people in your area to sell their bikes for free. As with other free classifieds websites, Kijiji allows users to post new ads, manage their ads and communicate with interested sellers. The website also has a rating system to help you evaluate the quality of the products that are being sold.

There are many advantages to buying a dirt bike online rather than having to visit a dealer that is located near you. For example, you may be able to buy your item at a lower price or buy it from someone who is not as involved in the business and therefore has less experience. Some people think that dealing with a dealer might be inconvenient, but there are more options available these days and often the bikes bought online have fewer issues than those purchased at an actual dealership.

How Did The Motocross Start

Since racing is considered a thrilling sport, motorcycle racing became part of the list but the racers are set to take their bikes on off-road tracks. Since these are made with dirt, it is often muddy which adds higher difficulty for the racers.

The sport started in America during the 1960s and has gained popularity since then. AMA started organizing the races and had its first championship in 1972. As the sport grew, the Japanese motorbike brands Suzuki and Kawasaki topped the most famous makers of dirt bikes. Indoor motocross also started in 1974 and had the first women’s championship in MX in 1995.

Many personalities started their athletic careers in this sport. Ricky Carmichael, Jessica Patterson, and Jeremy McGrath are to name a few.

Riders who want to join AMA championships are required to follow the AMA guide on dirt bikes to help different categories of racers find the equipment that is appropriate for them. Motocross can be a dangerous sport so following the safety precautions includes proper clothing, footwear, and wearing of body armor.

Final Words

After years of restrictions, MX fans can now watch the dirt and speed live on the racetracks. With its 12-round series in different parts of the USA, you will be able to have a chance to watch these professional motocross riders jump and slide on the racetrack.
